I posted one interpretation of a portable, primitive forge on the Elektric Anvil ( 
http://www.elektricanvil.net ) I use it at festivals for demo work.  It is not based on any 
particular historic artifact, but from a demo standpoint it has been a keeper.  It is simple, cheap 
to build, it "looks" the part and it is very easy to use as a model to explain how a forge works.
