What he said. I've had a huge crutch of beech for years, wide enough
left-to-right to hold a swage block to the right of the anvil. The
"no place for my toes" thing has been an annoyance from day one. But
the thing was spiked to the floor with 60d spikes, it was really
stable and I never moved it. With a new concrete floor, the stump was
wobbly. I've made a 4-legged metal stand. It sat four square on the
first try (luck, believe me) and although I've only spent a few
minutes at the anvil since, I think I'm going to love it.
Details: The 305# PW sits on 1/2" of conveyor belt in a 1-1/2" x
1-1/2" x 1/8" angle frame. Legs are 1" x 2" hollow structural.
Gussets where the legs join the angle and 1/4" x 1-1/4" stretchers on
three sides to keep the legs from spreading. That's fairly light
construction so I'll have to beef it up some if I have any 16# sledge
work to do (ghod forbid :-).
