Well, I tend to agree for a shop anvil stand, but they're bloody heavy if
you want a travelling anvil stand. I have one made from a stump, and I like
it for all the reasons you state- I also have another made from big chunks
of wood, almost RR ties, bound together with steel collars, with
handles/anvil staples on the top- it's about 100 years old.
What I need, though, are a few portable anvil stands. Don't like the
aesthetic of the metal type- was wondering if anyone had a design for one
that would either be collapsible, or could be used for tool strorage between
uses. The way things are going, I'm going to need half a dozen- I'm getting
more and more people wanting to play with my fire at SCA events ;-)
Any suggested designs?
BTW, I had a talk with my roommate today, after showing him some of the pix
of the portable forges I've been looking at. He knows where there might be a
couple of wagons that just might be the basis for my intended design...will
keep you guys posted. Might be others available, if anyone else is
interested.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is probably not a
cat.
Never a horse that cain't be rode,
And never a rider who cain't be throwed....
