Great little essay, Reynolds.
What works perfectly in one setting can't be expected to work in every
setting...
I spent this last week overseeing metal fab with a class of twenty people
who had (with only a couple exceptions) never welded anything. There were a
few spots in the wind turbines we were building where the welds had to be
really strong and I just discreetly made the welds while nobody was paying
attention. Showing off would have just discouraged somebody, and blobby
beginner welds were sufficient to the job everywhere else.
All this is just to say that there are even times when really ugly arc welds
are totally appropriate.
