One thing you mentioned was that you were afraid to use wooden wedges
because you might damage the frame.
This is not something to worry about. All two piece hammers use wooden
wedges to hold the anvil in alignment with the hammer- it is essential.
The wood absorbs the shock, and the action of the hammer will slowly jog the
wedges loose, which is why you need to tap em back down every once in a
while. They actually protect the frame from cracks, as opposed to causing
them.
My chinese hammer instructions recommend Korean Red Elm for wedges, but I
find white oak works quite well.
But whatever hardwood you get, USE THE WEDGES! It will help your alignment
problems a lot if the anvil isnt walking around.
