Shucks, and you missed the bus!  We could'a gone for beers in
Portland, Maine while you were supposed to be on your way to Kansas
City. :-)  As I recall, it didn't work very well as a conversation
starter.

But that's nothing.  I had a forged spider hand-delivered by a friend
to show in Leverett, Mass. and it stayed there for a couple of years
because there wasn't any handy way to ship a spider with a yard-wide
leg span back to Canada.  When I had a ride from New Hampshire to the
1982 ABANA conference, we picked it up and it made the round trip to
W. Va. and back to NH in a truck but I had to carry it home from
there.  That time I rode the bus and ferry with a 3' metal spider
strapped to my backpack with punji cords.  This led to some
entertaining conversation with the ferry crew but otherwise it was
mostly sidelong and very wary looks and plenty of um... personal
space. :-)
