Dave, if you want to save some money and wear and tear on your grinder not
to mention your time........use the electrolitic rust removal method that
was posted on here a couple years back. If you have a battery charger, it
works extremely well and removes only the rust and in theory will actually
put some metal back in place of the rust. We have an old rail line in our
neck of the woods too and I brought some of these spikes home and cleaned
them up using this method. Some of the spikes I brought home had more scaled
rust on them than metal left but they will produce something unique further
on down the road. If you don't have a copy of this method let me know and I
can email it to you off list unless others would like it too then I can just
post it to the list.
