Paul,
  Do you have any drawings you would be willing to share of your designs?  I have a affinity for trip hammers and the last couple had brass ways.  I would like to reduce friction and increase ease of opperation.  I am currently watching this discussion with GREAT interest ans I hope to make a self contained air hammer for myself... Hate running the aircompressor!
