[TheForge] buying a new anvil (was: pitted anvil)

I have 2 czech anvils. The first one I got was the 118 lb double horn to use
for demo's. It's light enough for me to haul around. The 2nd one I got is
the 205 lb "Bulgarian-style" double horn anvil. I really like them both. I'm
a hobby smith, so I'm not doing production work, but I have no qualms about
these anvils holding up. Good rebound on them both.
My first anvil was a 176 lb Hay-Budden ( which I still have ) but I do my
smithing on either of my czech anvils.
My attitude towards buying used anvils has shifted. For a good anvil I would
go up to $1.50/lb, for real prime maybe $2/lb, if they cost more than that
then you're better off buying a new czech anvil. Then you'll be the guy who
put the dings and pitts into the anvil some guy a hundred years from now
will be wondering how to repair. :-)
Another source for the czech anvils is http://www.forgeandanvil.com/
Good people and worth doing business with. They sold me my 118 lb anvil.
My 205 lb anvil came from Old World Anvils and Dan Morris is good people
too. I enjoy doing business with him.
There is a 3rd source and that's EuroAnvils. I'm sorry I don't know anything
about them so I can't say one way or another about dealing with them.
I almost forgot, I have a small 6 lb single horn czech anvil that I keep on
my workbench in the basement. So I guess I'd better correct it and say I
have 3 czech anvils. :-)
There are some good new anvils out there, but the czech anvils are good at a
bargain price.
