There are a couple of ways to repair.....proper welding of the face, which
is labor intensive, or having the face Blanchard ground via a machine shop.
The success of both methods requires skilled craft.
There are special welding electrodes for 'hard facing" surfaces and anvil
repairs can be effected using them. There is a special electrode called
Messer MG710 that is used and they (Messer) have a technical hotline to
assist you.
generally, this type of repair requires thorough preheating of the anvil
prior to welding and a specific number of beads to be run to reach a certain
hardness.
If the pit is not too deep, can you work around it. Also, it might be
helpful to wipe the face of the anvil with an oiled cloth at the end of the
work day.
