It looks like heat is the answer. After soaking in the sodium bisulfate for
about 15 hours with a 60 watt bulb touching the aluminum that was just out of
the liquid, the core of the tap fell out of the hole.
The heat of the bulb not only speeded up the reaction, it caused more of the
sodium bisulfate to dissolve making the solution stronger.
The aluminum is very clean with a slight mat surface. Almost looks anodized.
