We've got a "3-D printer" here at work that takes in 3-D plot files and builds a model out of some sort of plastic compound, one layer at a time. The entire process takes 15 minutes to an hour or so, depending on the size. Supposedly it's pretty durable, can be handled easily, and can even be used as a pattern for a casting.

I haven't seen it, but it was described in one of our company newsletters.

Hope is fading - the computer geeks are taking over.
