[TheForge] What is it

Pattern makers often work with wood of odd shapes, unlike carpenters or joiners
who work with wood of a usually more regular shape (i.e. with flat sides, easy
to grip in a woodworking vise).
Therefore their vises allow working on round and tapered shapes as well.
Having said that, it doesn't look a bit like the patternmaker's vise I'm used
to seeing, but that doesn't mean this isn't a different style.
Carriagemakers also work with a lot of wood of non-rectangular shapes as well,
and it looks more like the vise a carriagemaker friend has than the
patternmaker vise I have.
And if no one has yet mentioned it, patternmakers make the patterns for
castings.
