[TheForge] propane forge

This evening I put together one of these sidearm burners and the first
indication is that it works a lot better than the one I had before. I
mostly use coal, but find it handy to have a propane forge as well. Mine is
a very small one which I use for small jobs, checking out ideas etc. You can
see a drawing of it here. http://www.reil1.net/brforge.gif

This forge worked fine for what I wanted it for, but I must admit that I did
not know if it was in optimal tune. It got stuff hot and that was the main
thing. Now I know from Ron's site where he has images of the different flame
types, that mine was not in tune. I put a choke on it to see if that would
give me some needed control, but it did nothing, as I was not getting enough
air in the first place. The 1/4" nipple that went across the bell probably
cut off too much of the air.

That led me to try a sidearm based on a 1 1/4" tee. I mounted a choke on
this too. I have only tried it outside the forge, but the choke seems to
give me control that I did not have before, and I'm hopefull that my forge
will work better.

While working on it, I thought......this looks kinda like a very basic
carburetor, so why not find a real neat motorcycle carb from a junk yard
with a flared intake and all polished surfaces etc. with a good internal
choke. I wonder. ;-)
