First:
The 1/8 x 3 1/8 circle is the the bottom of the candle stand and acts as a drip pan.
Second:
The whole candle stand was assembled and then the bottom section was heated probably
with a rose bud torch "OR" I would heat the whole thing in a gas forge and when
it was very all hot I would pull it out and and quench the top section in the slack
tub just to the bottom of the center ring. I would then flip it over and quench the
bottom up to the top of the bottom ring. I would then have pre set up, a holding
vice to clamp the candle stand in and then twist the top which is cold and that will
twist the bottom to the desired spiral. This a very fast operation and you should
practice your moves cold and then I would practice your moves hot on a test piece
and the do the final project would then quench the whole thing and and start over
for the top twist. You will probably have to read the over a few times to
understand.
I know this sounds like sacrilege but I would modify the project and make it your
own. I would change the feet to a tighter rolled up scroll ? and thicker. Also I
would look at doing the top section with out the reverse spiral and maybe flair it
out to be wider at the top. or drive something in the top to bulge it out or remove
the top vertical elements and replace them with scrolls.
Also you might want to reverse the whole thing and put the fat part at the top,
which I think would look a lot better to me...
I hope this helps. and I will be looking for the lightning bolts from the F.W.
spirit...
