The clay need not be very thick. To make
a forge for demos, you could lay it over
vermiculite or something like that. I
would suggest a firebrick set under the
clay at points that you are likely to
abuse while working. Keep a bucket of
clay handy for repairs.
This would probably not work for
anything intended for heavier use.
