Phlip,
You'll find an overview of treadle hammers, including
http://www.monmouth.com/~freeman/bmf/others.htm
"Practical Blacksmithing" by MT Richardson might be a good source for some =
of the other questions.
Seems to me that Morgan Hall, out in OR, had a wooden forge. He used to =
be on this list, but I don't know whether he still is. Problem is, the =
clay lining is quite heavy. You might want to cheat and use an insulating =
refractory, but even that's heavy. If you use charcoal, no problem. Just =
remember that clinker sticks to refractories and can be a major nuisance.
There are bellows plans available. If you can't get any through this =
group, I could give you a couple names of folks around here who've built =
bellows.

Hey, guys,
I'm settled enough now, that I want to start building some special
equipment. What I'll be doing is setting it up on my little trailer to =
take
to SCA events, and I'd like things to be as period (pre-1600) as possible,
as well as reasonably portable.
I'd like to see plans and ideas for:
A treadle Hammer
A treadle-operated grinder
Wooden forge
A bellows
Early anvils
Any other traditional or very early smithing equipment you can find.
I realize there might not be plans of some of the things I'm interested =
in,
but any pictures and such with which you're familiar would help.
Also, any sites you might know of around New England, where there are
Colonial or earlier smithing displays would be helpful. Please don't avoid
mentioning something if you think it might be "too modern" or that
"everybody knows" because I AM new to the area, and may not have run into =
it
yet.
Thanks,
Phlip
