[TheForge] Cold Galvanizing Paints

Hey Dave,
There are 2 types of cold galvanizing paints that I know of.
The more commonly available version is finely powdered zinc dispersed in an
epoxy base. Several manufacturers make it. The one I use most is by LPS
Corp. It is generally available from marine supply dealers. Home depot
probably carries it also.
You need to have the iron as clean as possible. I like to use it directly
after sand blasting the Iron. If you use spray cans, really shake the heck
out of the can, or the zinc can clog the nozzle . You can use it as a finish
coating if you don't mind the matt zinc finish;otherwise let it dry
thoroughly before applying a top coating of paint.
Since it is essentially like applying a very thin sacrificial anode to the
metal, it might work on some non Ferris metals, but I'm not familiar with
using it in this manner.
The other zinc coating is called Demit coating, made by Ameron Paints. It is
generally used in ship yards to protect ship outer surfaces exposed to salt
water and salt spray.
I was on a Navy ship that was a test bed for the coating. It had been
applied 15 years before and was still in good condition.
I bribed a yard bird to coat my SCUBA bottles and was really happy with the
result..
Chuck
