Just fireclay and sand ought to work fine..the cement weakens when you cook
it good..throw in some vermiculite and chopped stainless wire strands and
it oughta make your forge more efficient and durable yet.....but really,
a lining of ash is sufficient.
Usually the cast iron doesn't burn out, but rather cracks from the thermal
shock of having water dumped on it while hot.
Considering that your's is already cracked, a few bolts and a patch
plate are all that's called for.
