Thought that I would put my two cents in.
Get the ring polished up to a bright shine and then put it in the forge to 
warm it up and when it just starts to turn colors pull it out and put bee's 
wax on it. Let cool and rub any excess wax off and leave it alone. I do this 
to my penandular brooches and get a real nice colored metal. From dark blues 
to an almost light steel color. I have two pieces of 1/4" steel done that way 
on my key chain and they haven't gotten rusty and they end up being a 
polished from handling them
