Ray Miller already summed this up pretty well...basically, you have to keep
the 8 lights (they can be on the same branch, though usually aren't) have to
be on the same level. The 9th light, or shammas, is used to light the rest,
and CAN be on the same level -- or it can be higher, lower, or off to one
side.
Not everyone has a problem with "non-Kosher" menorahs. Some folks will use
whatever candelabra strikes their fancy. I had one person look at my first
attempt (which led to learning about the "rules) and indicated they would
light mine for the holiday -- but would also light a Kosher one. You can see
the first at www.cvbg.org, click "gallery", then my name, then "metal art".
(Why its listed as metal art, I don't know -- but hey, its on the web, I'm
not complaining!). My friend who said she'd light mine and a Kosher one
showed the picture to her Rabbi -- he has no problem with it. However, the
person who runs her Synagogue's gift shop will only carry Kosher ones.
These days Channukah menorahs usually use candles. However, I've got a
couple planned to use oil lamps, getting back to the original story.
Oh..one other thing...menorahs aren't just for Channukah ;-)
