Hi Wayne:
I'm sure you could use a room CO monitor to tune your forge but you'd have
to track a bunch of variables such as: Room volume, air exchange rate, air
flow patterns, etc. etc. Now, if you know somebody with an engine analyzer
and could recalibrate it the exhaust probe might work okay. Still, I have no
idea how much CO a propane forge should produce so you'd have to establish a
baseline by testing well adjusted forges of different sizes and outputs.
I use the old mark one eyeball instead. First I look for a little pinkish
orange flame exhausting from the forge. This indicates a rich burn. Then
comes the difinitive test. Does it produce scale? If the answer is yes I
richen the mixture a bit. If the answer is no I lean it out a bit and
retest. I adjust the mix till it's at the point where it just barely doesn't
produce scale.
Good idea having a CO monitor though, even adjusted nominally a propane
forge produces lots of CO. Good ventilation is a must and the monitor will
tell you if it's good enough.

If it ain't forged
it ain't real.
Wrought iron is.
