My opinion
Average markup is 100%. Sell your pieces to different shops at the price
that you want to get, your wholesale price and let them double it. Just be
sure that if you sell to an individual client (rather than a store) that you
charge a retail (doubled) price so that you don't undercut your stores.
A store doesn't need an exclusive if they can't give you a guaranteed
purchase amount every month, one that's big enough for you to live on.
However, it would be a good idea to geographically space out your retail
clients for their sake and for yours.

stores? I am working up some items that are horse related. There are
several stores in town that I will approach. Items will not be "art" but
practical pieces, tools, saddle racks, maybe a few "pretties" for the
mantle. Once I figure how much I need for each item, do I give the store a
"recommended selling price"? Should I encourage all the stores to use the
same price? What if one store wants an exclusive on them? What is an
"average" markup for a retail store? All opinions appreciated, Doug
