He never wrought the iron, so what he had was a blob of mixed iron and steel
and probably slag.
When he got done with the smelting he switched from charcoal to a gas forge.
Somebody on this list knows exactly how to use charcoal in the smelting fire
to put carbon into the ore, but I just know that it happens somehow.
There's a sentence or two about how he picks the high carbon steel out of
the blob of ore.
