The cylindrical shape has several advantages for a small forge. The shape
naturally holds the ceramic fiber in place without the need of any type of
mechanical fasteners. ITC-100 is not an absolute necessity to hold the ceramic
fiber in place. The ITC coating is used because it makes the forge cheaper to
operate as well as to seal the fibers to help keep them from becoming airborne.
The cylindrical shape also provides a more even heat distribution from both
convection of the combustion gasses and radiation from the ceramic fiber. The
radiation aspect is also further improved with the ITC coating.
Lastly, the cylindrical shape is cheaper to build. It uses less material and is
a simpler construction. That is not to say other shapes won't work. Everyone has
their own preferences.
