Yes. If you put your jet near the (closed) back at an
angle you get a swirling flame down the full length of the tube.
If you've got a plate over the front with a small door centered in
it, that flame bounces off the front wall and stays contained.
You'll get some of the same effect with a square tube, but
the boxes with the jets on top pointed down are just inefficient in
terms of gas used to get the same steady heats.
