on bars where the final length is critical, I use a
formula I got from a forestry textbook (it may be the
one for truncated cones), it involves plugging the
area of the wide part, the narrow part, and the
desired length. The formula yields volume (such as
cubic inches) then I just figure how much parent stock
yields that volume.

I don't have the formula right now but I can post it
if anyone is interested.
