 For halving (1" to 0.5") multiply the length of the taper by 1.33.
 IOW, add a third.

  I just happened to know that specific one offhand - what you want
is the equation for volume of a cone, I *believe* (old brain
cells<G>) it's pi times r-squared times length over three.
