I have a lot of oldish cast iron cookware that I use all the time and
used to use over an opened stove cover. Present stove doesn't have
stove covers so I cleaned the ancient crud off all my frypans and
kettles. (But I dunno about this Chinese as-shipped coating. Might
be a very different animal from ordinary, garden variety crud. :-)

Coarse (black) 3M Clean'n'Strip(tm) wheels at high speed and 3M
BristleDisks(tm) at angle-grinder speed. Worked real good. No
dangerous chemicals. No ugly gouges on the cookware. Lots of fine,
greasy, airborne dust so it's not a kitchen project.

I'm a real C'n'S fan but I just discovered the BristleDisks. Unlike
the C'n'S, they do leave visible circular surface patterns on M/S
but are fine for cast iron.
