Dan,
Nol Putnam was here over the weekend and said to put the weight of the
gate on the ground if possible. This was the most stable position.
Lacking that, make sure the concrete post has a very good foundation
because it will be supporting your gate. If possible, before the
contractor put up the pillars, can you modify the design so that the
center of the pillar extends into the footer? I'm not an architect like
Walt Mullett, but I would try for an I-beam or some such connector
between the pillars and their footers.
As to the size of hinge, most of my strap hinges have had 1/2 inch pins.
For a gate like you describe, I'd go to 5/8 or 3/4 inch pins to be on
the safe side. The pintles should be put into the pillars as they are
being built so the concrete will set up around the pintle. You could
weld a small cross-bar onto the pintle end that goes into the pillar.
Just my thoughts.

Subject: [TheForge] gate and pintel hinges
Hey All,
I have a customer who wants a garden gate made of oak and iron.
The gate is in 2 equal parts. 2.5 feet wide each and 8 feet tall. I am
planning on using pintel hinges. Each gate will be hanging from 3 pins.
The pins will set into pillars made of concrete and cinderblocks that a
contractor will be installing in a few weeks.
Now..here is the question. I know how to made a small pintel hinge to
attach to wood. It is going to be set into concrete and the gate is
going to be BIG. Is there a special shape to make the part of the
pintel that goes into the concrete to make it stick better? What size
stock should I use for pintels holding gate of this weight? The
customer wants the pintel ASAP, though the gate doesn't have to be done
until late June.=20
BTW: Thanks for the help earlier with the lamps. I have the concret all
set out and the lamps are coming along. I will post pictures of the
finished lamps when they are painted.
