[TheForge] steel pipe

I was using some 3/4" od seamed pipe as a mandrel to wrap some 1/4" round
around, and noticed an awful stink produced by the hot steel on the pipe.
Does anyone know if steel pipe is coated with anything, or how toxic it is?
To get rid of it I had to heat to a bright red, wire brush off the scale,
and then wire wheel the piece.  Anyone have any better suggestions?
