Temp effect on light output varies with the type of lamp and ballast.
Cold temp operation decreases the light output, effeecting the 4' and
8' slimline systems the most. (The bulbs in the freezer case at your
local supermarket are high output-HO and super high output SHO lamps
and ballasts). While the light output increases as the lamps warm,
output is still lower with lower ambient temps. One inexpensive
solution is to install "tube guards", thin clear plastic sheaths that
insulate the tube substantially, in addition to protecting occupants
from flying glass should a lamp get banged. These are a great way to
go in an unheated or minimally heated shop.
