I like the versatility that a wood wall offers not to mention the looks. I
also have a bunch of ship lap to get rid of and would like to do a portion
of the shop with it. My basic shop layout is a rectangle with one end being
the hot work area i.e., coal forge along wall in middle, LG to the left,
tool racks to the right in corner, charcoal forge in the middle of room
opposite coal forge, anvil, swage block, post vice on moveable base in there
somewhere. The charcoal forge in the middle acts as a barrier to a good
portion of the other part of the shop which happens to be along the south
wall where I was able to put a lot of windows to provide natural light, this
would make a good bench area and the ship lap would be great here. I don't
have a raised sill like you do. I am kind of leaning toward putting concrete
board maybe 4' high in all of the hot work area. I find myself being pretty
paranoid about fires as a general rule. Not good to have things accumulated
on the floor of the shop that are in any way flammable, or as GHS pointed
out, nooks or crannies where the hot pieces can hide.
