Once again, look around, 'cause it's already been done. Dimitri
Gerakaris ran an article in the A/R, ca 1979 on how to photograph your
stuff. The most important part is to use a totally neutral SMOOTH
background as even a coarse fabric can intrude into the picture, and
proper lighting to bring out the features of the piece. I shot a gate
once, against a light tarp and it is such an ugly photo because you see
every crease and stain in the fabric and there is not enough light to
make the gate stand out. If I had used a strong light on the piece,
there would be enough contrast to cut out the background with Photoshop.
In said article, Dimitri suggested going to a newspaper and asking for
short ends of wide newsprint as they pitch these, rather than reload
paper in the middle of an issue.
