Exactly. The idler motor goes in parallel with your load motor (with
appropriate switching). You have a very simple means to put together a
rotary converter (or two). Just adding an idler should improve your
chain fall quite a bit (but check it...). Adding capacitors (rule of
thumb given in article previously mentioned) will improve things even
more. Not so much a matter of efficiency as balancing the current in the
motor windings. You basically want to add capacitors until the voltages
from each side of the single phase to the third leg are about 10% higher
than the single phase itself. This gets you pretty close to balanced
under load.
It is looking like our move will be next summer. I'll keep you (and
others) posted.
