[TheForge] mig welders???

Depends on what you are doing, the man I learned to mig from had an
infinite range machine, but he could weld wood. I don't care what it
was, if it could be joined with a mig, he could do it. He needed the
infinite range to be able to get just right for smaller and more
delicate parts. We frequently had to make parts from originals that
were too far gone to save, but had specific uses or characteristics
that prevented us from fabricating it completely.

All the little parts from behind the dash of a car, like the
internals of a 12v. clock from a 57 fuelie vette that has sat
underwater up to the dash. He'd just pry open the tabs that I had
always broken, pull it apart looking for falling debris and start a
mental inventory of what was gone and what could be saved and just do
it. The clock kept perfect time when he was done.

I have many times seen him, (or me for him), move the range setting
just a bit, "Bump him up a little for me would you?". He even
mentioned that he favored that option and said he wouldn't need it,
"if most of the metal we worked on wasn't half rotten". On the other
hand his machine only had a 30% duty cycle and when we'd get into
frame re-fabrication, he have to wait on it.

Depends on what you are doing, new stock, heavier applications, you
probably want more amps, more than you need ultra-fine control.
