I agree with Steve on this, however if you have a VERY slightly loose
handle, a week in a sealed bucket of linseed oil may also help.  The
oil will expand the handle a wee bit, then after you bring it back into
the air, the surface areas will polymerize, sealing the remainder of
the oil for a good while.  This will not work, to my knowlege, on a very
loose handle which should be replaced for reasons of safety.  I was 
atriking one afternoon at Allaire and the head of the sledge I was 
swinging flew off at the top of a swing... right across the shop.
Luckily there was nobody on the receiving end.  It was bad day for
sledges as I managed to break the handles on two others as well.  I
swear it wasn't me. :)
