I keep my hammers (head first) in a solution of ethylene glycol (same as the
anti freeze in your car).  Some wooden boat people use it on the inside of
their boats in the off season to keep the wood tight and to act as a
preservative.  My hammers are always tight doing this.

I dip my loosest hammers in the tub to get them to tighten up a little, the
wood seems to dry out and shrink, but thats only every week or so, you might
be right about dipping every few minutes
