The main shaft on the weather vane base was forged down from 1" square to
just under 3/4" diameter round. It is cut off so the top of it is flat.I then
took a piece of 3/4" black iron pipe that slides down over this and you flare
the end a little so what it gets down to where the 1" square was tapered down
it will not bind. The piece I cut from the top I welded to a piece of 3/8
rod.I necked down the other end of my 3/4" pipe leaving about a 3/8 hole and
you slide the 3/8" rod with the welded on piece down the pipe from the flared
end.You now have a length of 3/8 rod hangin out the end of your pipe(dont
weld it yet)Slide the pipe down over the main shaft but as you do this take a
5/8" or there abouts single ball bearing and set it right on top of the shaft
let the pipe slide down over the top of the shaft. Now you can adjust where
your flared end of the pipe sits on the taper of the main shaft once you have
where you want just tack the 3/8 rod where it comes out of the pipe and your
in bussiness. When you get ready to mount the thing just add a big gob of
grease in there. Its amazing how freely it turns. And this weather vane was
quite tall and wide.
Now if your all lost on my explanation I got the idea from a book on weather
vanes that I borrowed from a friend when I started this project and can't for
the life of me remember what that book was called
