Their are special oils that can be used. Different materials steel, 
aluminum, brass, etc. may require different fluids. I have been using what 
ever oil was handy (motor oil, penetrating oil, 3 in 1, gun oil, ......). 
Go slow and back up the tap frequently to help clear the cuttings.
