I watched a program tonight about the celts and there was a bit about an air
force base somewhere in England that was being built and a large truck got
stuck in a bog, they found a chain nearby and pulled the truck out, turned
out the chain was made in 100 AD and the lake beside the bog was full of
golden celtic "stuff", the chain was for holding slaves, it had 4 large
rings along its length for hands and feet. Nice looking style of chain too,
they remarked on how good the craftmanship must have been to be able to take
the weight of the lorry, I get a kick out of imagining bringing people from
the past up to date with their lifes work, inventions etc (ie: giving
Galileo a nice big telescope) imagine telling that smith that nearly 2000
years later his handywork would be used to pull a 10 ton chariot out of the
mud, I wonder if he wouldve sweated a bit more when he made each weld :)
