What did Francis use to grind his coal?

I've noticed that a lot of people don't like the fines in their coal.

I prefer to have a certain amount.
Wet fines act are the glue that allow me to build a tight bank of coal.

Using water on your fire keeps the coal from burning so fast that you do not
get a good bank of coke. When I use a coal fire, especially for Damascus, I
use a lot of coal on both sides of the fire for a reduced atmosphere and
plenty of water to keep the coal wet most of the time. Francis Whitaker
always ground his coal and wet packed it in the fire pot and used plenty of
water during the day.
