Well, besides the usual battery changes I did all the usual daily gold &
silver repairs at work-shorten/repair chains, replace clasp, size rings &
rivet watch bands (brass axel rivets on tri fold buckles).
At school last week we did some experimentation with panatation on
silver & copper (dip metal into liver of sulfur, then dip into ammonia, then
water -it gives an interesting span of colors. I did my silver ring & it
came out gun metal with purple overtones). My projects for tomorrow are to
make a silver chain in 18 Ga sterling, shape & drill a pair of whetstones to
look like the ones on page 48 of "Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga" I will
add silver rings in the holes to hang them off of a thong like I saw
examples of when I went out to Denver to see the exhibit. I will also be
creating granules of fine silver to use in making a granulated baronial
coronet for myself. To do this I will use the method described by Cellini
in his treaties on metal working. I will take equal length snips of fine
silver then place them in a clean crucible with powdered charcoal then heat
in a kiln to the melting point. The surface tension will cause the silver
to ball up, after it is cool I will sinter the granules from the charcoal &
grade them by size using a series of screens. Since everyone is more
interested in iron than silver I will spare you the discussion of how to do
the granulation-at least for now.
I also plan to stop by & see Rick at his shop, if he has time tomorrow.
Pax,
Olaf
who will start taking BS classes this Fall at Old Sturbridge Village through
the WCFC.
