Phlip,

Here is a possible source for your Skewer handle designs: d'Allemagne's
Decorative Antique Ironwork (available from DOVER books, $21.95).
Unfortunately, I did not find any pictures of skewers specifically, but
there are numerous examples of fork and knive handles. Also found examples
of knitting needle handles. I would guess that it is save to say that if a
particular design was used on one type of utensile it was probably used on
others (or is that that streaching it too far in terms of historical
authenticity???).

I do not have a way of sending these pictures via computer. If you can not
find a copy of the book, send me your snailmail address off-list and I will
mail you some xerox copies of sample pages.

Given your interest in things ancient, this book is a "MUST-HAVE". It
covers ironwork from Roman times to the nineteenth century. 415 pages with
4500 objects. The down side is that some of the pages are captioned: such
and such sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. So you have a dozen different
items but do don't know which examples are from which century. Other pages
are specific, everything shown is from a specific century. Some of the work
is identified by country of origin.
