First off hammer it hot,  you will like the results much better,  do a test
piece of each.    If you have a power hammer of have a friend who does do it
that way with a texturing die.  Level as needed with a flatter tool under the
hammer, or treadle hammer if you have one,  if not on the anvil with a
flatter.    You also will have a stud every 16" to help with any
irregularities when you install.
