Yeah, I feel like an oddball because all the shipyard workers around here
rave about 7018 and use it for everything, but I don't particularly like
using it. It really helps, though, to get a good ground close to the
weld...I was at a class for learning how to build wind generators from junk,
and a really good welder suggested that having the ground clamped to the
table was causing way too much voltage drop. I cleaned up a spot to clamp
onto the work piece, and suddenly I was running 7018 and liking it...
Usually I'd rather prep the weld and use 7014. Just like in the forge,
"scarf and weld" ;)
I still say a simple butt weld in the coal fire would have been quicker on
that 1 1/2", clean and classy. Easy on big stock.
