A small section like 1/4" looses heat fast . Brazing itself puts a 
surprising amount of stress on steel...it is possible to part 18 ga steel 
with a brazing  bead.  You may well  have brought home some tool steel... 
Here are some things to try.
Pre and post heat the piece, bringing the steel down slowly.
Bury the piece in ashes or vermiculite while still hot and let cool slowly.
You may get away with simply tempering  the steel before bending.
That size makes nice little chisels and chasing tools...
