I have been out of the business for a number of years, so there may have been some up grades. Spar Varnish you can do a light sand and revarnish. The plastic the recoat is a bit of a problem although you can do the same as with spar varnish a light sand the substrate material may not stand up. The epoxy coatings are great, but the when they go it is a $25,000.00 fix, up in a matter of speaking. From everything that I have seen constant maintance, is still the cheapest. Yellen in my books had it right. Yearly maintance contracts.

If you want to see the natural colour of the wood or in the blacksmithing world, the steel, you will have at least yearly maintance if not twice a year. I can not speak for powder coatings they may have clear coats that last longer. If there is a coating that will last forever please let me know and I will be the guy with the boat.
