Just sitting down with a beer so forgive the typo's. I was a shipwright before moving to the prairies. I started blacksmithing since there is not much shipwright work here. I had a rich guy with a nice boat and I did his bright work for him. I did it every spring and fall, I can't remember the cost but lets say $5,000.00 a year. He decided to save money he would have me only do it once a year. Well instead of a light sanding I had to strip off all the old varnish and sand the wood (teak) to get rid of the gray. It ended up costing $10,000.00. The bottom line is that UV and the elements brake down the Varnish, paint will last longer. If you want to see the natural colour of the wood or in the blacksmithing world, the steel, you will have at least yearly maintance if not twice a year. I can not speak for powder coatings they may have clear coats that last longer. If there is a coating that will last forever please let me know and I will be the guy with the boat.
