Depends on what you mean by "traditional finish". Most of the architectural
iron work I have seen (such as gates) that has lasted any length of time out
doors has been painted, and rather thickly too.

Someone once said "The only real finish to iron out of doors is rusted away
to nothing"

Sorry but the fact is iron exposed to the elements rusts. The best means of
blocking the elements out is a thick barrier coat. this why iron is
galvanized or painted. If you need a material that will look like forged
steel but will not rust, try plastic it is what most movie swords and armour
are made out of today. Of course that is painted too.
